Position Information

 

These positions will assist with general farming and haying operations for the center, and data collection associated with forage studies. These positions will work on numerous forage research projects involving annual forages, cover crops and cropping systems. This job will include but is not limited to, preparing fields for seeding and harvesting, all components of a haying operation, plot preparation, laboratory work and sample preparation for data entry. This is a 40+ hour/week position with the opportunity to work overtime with appropriate compensation. Some night and weekend work may be required.

  • Assist with/plant field crops including barley, oats, millet, and corn
  • Execute all phases of haying operations including mowing or conditioning, raking, baling, and stacking bales
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of farm and research equipment
  • Execute field research duties including data recording, sample clipping, soil sampling and plot maintenance
  • Lab research duties include sample bag prep, weighing samples and recording data, and grinding samples for quality analysis
  • Assist with farm maintenance projects which may include building repairs, gravel work, and rock removal
  • May be required to occasionally assist with livestock operations
    • A working knowledge of farming operations in the Northern Plains
    • A basic knowledge of putting up quality hay
    • Experience operating/maintaining tractors, skid steer, farm equipment, and haying equipment.
    • Capable of collecting data and performing research related tasks
  • Ability to drive ATV and tractor safely
  • Candidates must have the ability to work outside through a variety of environmental conditions including but not limited to high temperatures and precipitation.
  • Additionally, the candidate must have the ability and willingness to work both independently and as a member of a team. A team player is highly recommended. 
  • Valid driver’s license is required for this position.
  • Housing is provided

Requirements & Competencies:

    • A working knowledge of farming operations in the Northern Plains
    • A basic knowledge of putting up quality hay
    • Experience operating/maintaining tractors, skid steer, farm equipment, and haying equipment.
    • Capable of collecting data and performing research related tasks
