Job Title:  Career and Academic Advisor

Location: Mayville, ND

Compensation: $42,000-$47,000 - based on experience

Benefits: Includes single or family health care coverage (premiums paid for by the university), basic life insurance, EAP, retirement plan, tuition waiver, annual and sick leave. Optional benefits available: supplemental life, dental, vision, long- term care insurance, flexible spending account, and supplemental retirement plans.

Position Information:  Mayville State University is seeking a Career and Academic Advisor. This position will focus most of their time (65%) on career preparation for all students, with special emphasis on first-year students and sophomores. There will also be significant time (35%) devoted to academic advising, especially new students, first-generation and undeclared students, and working very closely with the SOS program.

This position serves as a champion for all activities related to holistic career development for students. This includes such things as resume’ and cover letter review and the linking of meaningful campus engagement with a career development process, and includes the use of various surveys and instruments to determine student strengths, career/values alignment, etc.

The Career and Academic Advisor participates as a collaborative member of the Academic Advising Center with a focus on new students, first-generation and undeclared students, and integrates developmental academic advising through a career preparation lens.

It is expected that the person serving in this role will develop programming that furthers both areas of emphasis for both on-campus and online and distance students.

Required Competencies:

  • Knowledge of the NACE career readiness competencies is helpful but not required.

  • Demonstrated experience organizing student activities and programs
  • Demonstrated public speaking abilities
  • Excellent communication skills--interpersonal, oral and written
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and be self-motivated
  • Demonstrated teamwork, initiative, customer service, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Competencies in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work flexible hours. Occasional weekend and evening hours required.
  • Detail-oriented

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilize Handshake and other Career Services programs and packages (training will be provided)
  • Develop a holistic career exploration model, focusing on new, first-year, and transfer students.
  • Develop a career curriculum, integrating NACE competencies.
  • Plan and execute special events, including summer registration and orientation.
  • Maintain a case load of academic advisees.
  • Collaborate with residence life and other student services, athletics, and faculty departments to develop and implement student programming.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Affairs and Advising Center Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Education, Communications, Social Science, or related fields.
  • Higher education/Student Affairs experience, Career Services experience, experience with internship programs, either as an undergraduate or graduate student will be beneficial.
