Assistant Professor of Hard-Rock Geology 

The Department of Geosciences at Minot State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in hard-rock geology. The appointment will be at the assistant professor level starting fall 2024. A PhD in geological sciences by time of appointment is expected. A broad, field- and lab-based background in mineralogy, petrology, and structural geology is preferred. Teaching expectations include: upper-level mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and structural geology; and contribution to introductory geology courses and field-trip based regional geology courses. Engagement of undergraduate students in research is also expected. MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY – HARD-ROCK GEOLOGY 

Position Title/Overview:  The Department of Geosciences at Minot State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in hard-rock geology. This appointment will be at the assistant professor level starting Fall 2024. 

Duties/Responsibilities:  All applicants will be expected to contribute to the mission of the university in teaching, research and service. Teaching expectations include: upper-level course in mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and structural geology; contribution to introductory courses (environmental geology, earth science, and physical geology); and field-trip based regional geology courses. Successful applicants will demonstrate an ability to develop an active research program that would ideally include field-based and lab-based studies involving undergraduate students. The department is well equipped for teaching and research. In addition to basic lab and field equipment, the department is well equipped for a variety of types of work, including material characterization (Panalytical X’Pert XRD, Cube II desktop SEM with EDAX EDS) and related sample preparation (Spex jaw crusher, Spex dual mixer mill with tungsten carbide vials, McCrone micronizing mill, muffle furnace, Buehler PetroThin thin-section machine, Buehler Metaserv 2000 grinder/polisher, Dentron Vacuum Desk II sputter coater with carbon attachment); water analysis (ICP-AES, MP-AES, GFAA, LCMS); geospatial investigations (Topcon total station, ESRI ArcEditor Suite, Trimble GeoXT); and remote sensing (UAV with LiDAR, multispectral, FLIR, and photogrammetry capabilities). 

Qualifications/Selection Criteria:  A PhD in geological sciences by time of appointment is expected. Strong applicants who are ABD with a plan to complete their degree will also be favorably considered. Applicants should demonstrate potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and engagement in research and scholarship.
